Procedures
At Obesity Docs, we provide a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to weight loss and weight management. You will receive a complete check-up from the medical, physical & psycho-social aspects and receive a detailed evaluation by our doctor and dietitian. From the medical result, we will obtain a scientific assessment of your body composition, chemistry and metabolic rate. Combined with the evaluation, we will be able to provide effective treatment for you.
Our dedicated team specializes in weight management using both non-surgical and surgical weight loss methods. Find out more about the weight loss procedures below:
Gastric Balloon
Also known as Endoscopic Intragastric Balloon procedure. It is non-surgical and involves placing a gastric balloon in the stomach using a gastroscope under sedation. The balloon occupies space in the stomach and gives you a feeling of fullness, helping you to cut down your food portion sizes during mealtimes.
Ideal for those:
- Who are overweight with Body Mass Index (BMI) more than 27
- With obesity-related health conditions like heart disease or Type 2 diabetes
- Who don’t qualify for surgery due to health issues
Advantages:
- Non-surgical procedure, hence, no scars
- Minimal risk of complications
- Minimal disruption to daily activities
Disadvantages:
- Short term weight loss solution as the balloon will need to be removed after six months. Weight will be regained if there is no change in diet and lifestyle.
Gastric Band
Also known as Laparoscopic Gastric Banding. It involves placing a silicone band around the upper part of the stomach to act as a valve and control the amount of food entering the stomach. It forces you to take small morsels of food and chew carefully. The band also lead to slow down the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. Hence, tricking your brain into thinking that it’s full and that you will stop eating after a few bites.
Ideal for those:
- Who are obese with Body Mass Index (BMI) more than 35
- Who have BMI more than 30 with metabolic syndromes like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes
Advantages:
- Minimally invasive surgery, hence, faster recovery and healing
- Doctor can adjust the band according to your needs and progress.
- Non-permanent. The band can be removed by doctor at any time
Disadvantages:
- Requires longer time to see the weight loss result as tightening of the band is done progressively over the months
- Possibility of band slippage
Gastric Bypass
Also known as Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. It involves creating a little stomach pouch from the full-sized stomach by stapling it up. Then connecting the small intestine to the little pouch so that the food taken can be pass out of the stomach. As the stomach pouch is connected to a lower part of the small intestine, the food ‘bypasses’ much of the small intestine. As a result, there is lesser chances of food being absorbed into the digestive system. This allow you to feel full faster, eat lesser and absorbing fewer calories.
Ideal for those:
- Who are severely obese with Body Mass Index (BMI) more than 35
- With obesity-related health conditions like heart disease or Type 2 diabetes
- Who did not achieve the desired result from dieting & exercising
Advantages:
- Highly effective with significant long-term weight loss (60 to 80 percent excess weight loss)
- Produces favourable changes in gut hormones that reduce appetite and enhance satiety
- Improve or resolve obesity-related diseases like heart blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes
Disadvantages:
- Require taking multivitamin, iron and calcium supplements for life to prevent nutritional deficiencies, due to the intestinal bypass component in the procedure
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Also called the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy. It involves stapling the stomach to reduce the amount of food it can hold. The part of the stomach that is stapled and removed is known to produce the hunger hormone “ghrelin”. Therefore, helps to reduce appetite. After the stomach is reduced from a bag-shaped organ into a sleeve, the smaller stomach will help to significantly reduce the amount of food (and thus calories) that can be consumed.
Ideal for those:
- Who are overweight with Body Mass Index (BMI) more than 35
- With obesity-related health conditions like heart disease or Type 2 diabetes
- Who did not achieve the desired result from dieting & exercising
Advantages:
- Highly effective with significant long-term weight loss (70 percent excess weight loss)
- Results in favourable changes in gut hormones that suppress hunger, reduce appetite and improve satiety
- Lower risk of complications
Disadvantages:
- Permanent procedure. Will not be able to reverse, as part of the stomach has been removed
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty
Now there is a new procedure called Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) that emulates the benefits of surgery in a minimally invasive way. It is an alternative if you are severely overweight or unable to lose weight through diet and exercise
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty reduces the dimension of the stomach using an endoscopic suturing device without the requirement for surgery. Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty leads to considerable weight loss by reducing the capacity to consume. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the risk of operative complications.
