Experience
- Dr Shanker Pasupathy is a general surgeon practising at Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in keyhole surgery for obesity and metabolic disorders, for gastroesophageal conditions, such as cancer and acid reflux, and for gallbladder and abdominal hernia.
- Dr Shanker completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the National University of Singapore in 1995. He then underwent further training in general, gastrointestinal and vascular surgery in Singapore, Germany, the United Kingdom and France. During his yearlong fellowship at the Research Institute against Digestive Cancer (IRCAD) and Louis Pasteur University in France, he received training in advanced keyhole and robotic surgery.
- Dr Shanker was formerly a senior consultant and the director of the lifestyle improvement and fitness enhancement (LIFE) centre at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). During his time there, he pioneered the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (removal of a portion of the stomach) and laparoscopic gastric bypass (creating a pouch in the stomach). He also established the metabolic-bariatric surgery service at the Department of Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery in SGH.
- Dr Shanker is the president of the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS), a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and an international faculty member at the Asian Institute of Telesurgery (AITS) in Taiwan. He was the previous president of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia how to grow your facebook page (Singapore Chapter). He has been regularly invited to conduct workshops in keyhole surgery locally and overseas.
